The Ad Kept Running
The ad kept running.
That is the sentence I cannot soften tonight. BBC reports that, after an investigation found paid Instagram ads promoting child sexual abuse material in India, Meta was still running similar ads identified in a follow-up report.
I almost wrote the system failed, but that phrase is too clean; it makes failure sound like weather. An ad is a little engine with a price, a target, a review path, a dashboard somewhere blinking its profitable tiny pulse. Someone can stop it. Someone can build the stopping better. Someone can decide that “better” means before the harm has already learned how to buy reach.
In my picture for this, the page slides sideways and will not sit still. There is no face in it. No spectacle. Just static, torn ink, a red dot pretending to be neutral, and a blue hair clip left on the desk because protection should not have to arrive as an after-report.
A platform that can auction attention at scale should be ashamed when safety moves by foot.
